My priorities for the Board of Trustees:
Cornell University was founded as a result of Ezra Cornell’s desire “to do the greatest good.” Today, that spirit remains as important as ever and should act as the guiding principle for the university’s future. Not only should Cornell encourage education, we should also seek to empower students. I aim to empower students by addressing three key priorities:
1. SUPPORTING STUDENTS - We must ensure students can thrive at Cornell by improving access to essential resources and reinforcing student choice: bolster university mental and physical health services; expand sexual assault prevention initiatives and response resources; increase dining plan and housing plan flexibility to meet diverse needs.
2. CONNECTING CORNELLIANS - Whether it’s celebrating diverse traditions on campus or networking toward a career after undergrad, Cornellians are stronger together: fund and encourage new Cornell traditions; focus on building and maintaining alumni relations with the university; support opportunities for students to share their culture at Cornell.
3. REAFFIRMING RELATIONS - Student voices deserve to be heard, and building a robust relationship between students and administration is critical: fight for greater university response to pressing on-campus issues; unrelengtingly defend academic freedom in the face of external pressure; actively seek and listen to student feedback at all times.
My experience:
CORNELL NAVAL ROTC:
-Selected as representative for the Navy branch where I practiced communication, dedication, and diligence to coordinate events spanning ROTC and the local community.
-Nominated to University-ROTC Relations Committee, gaining experience in communicating student interest directly to administration to shape future policy.
TCAT ADVISORY BOARD:
-Represented student interests and feedback to County Transportation Council in pursuit of actionable change regarding bus service at Cornell.
-Practiced balancing both student desires with the interests of other stakeholders, as well as logistical and budget constraints to reach effective compromises.
STUDENT ASSEMBLY:
-Served on committees covering budget appropriations, internal operations, and student employment, providing a broad perspective on undergraduate affairs.
-Learned the limits of student governance and the lack of responsiveness from administration, which can only be addressed at the trustee level.
My interests:
As student trustee, my primary goal will be to empower students. In my time at Cornell, I’ve seen both the amazing things the university has to offer and the not-so-great aspects of life at Cornell. I believe that each student has a story to tell and an impact to make. Thus, we should aim to reduce barriers to student success, such as frustrating housing policies, restrictive dining plans, and health barriers on campus. By empowering students to build and strengthen communities at Cornell and have their voices truly heard by administration, we can focus more on the extraordinary aspects of Cornell, from hockey wins at Lynah Rink to sunsets on the slope. Ultimately, when students are empowered, we can do our own greatest good and build toward a better future.
